It’s OK To Take Time Off From The Gym

This is something I posted on @Neuro log. I figured I would repost here to unclutter his log.

The subject was taking a break from training.

My opinion only… I believe that’s the best attitude/mindset. Unless you’re competing there’s no reason to miss out on the many beautiful things in life for the gym.

Dave Tate at ELITEFTS did an article years ago on this. He interviewed a handful of powerlifters that were ranked extremely high in the world and well known internationally. It was all anonymous so they could speak freely.

All of them were heavy into narcotic pain killers and debilitated. They explained how many big life moments they missed out on just so they wouldn’t miss a training session. Not one of them made a nickel off their lifting other than the (maybe) $1000 prize money at the moment.

Basically they all said it wasn’t worth it and their records/names faded into obscurity.

Average meathead can afford to miss a gym day…a week…or even take a month off. Unless you’re making a living off your “brand” there’s no need to risk life or limb.

My opinion which is worth just what I charged ya… nothing.

Only a couple months in from a year off, I support this wholeheartedly.

We as meatheads begin to treat the gym like a high school sport: 99% of us are going nowhere with it, but we risk our futures, training through sickness and injury etc, for the reality that nothing will come of it.

I had a friend who started using AAS in high school. We was just sophomores when he started. He went to school to be a pharmacist. He was bodybuilding as well and was doing great. He was traveling around the world doing shows. He ended up picking up the Oxy habit to help him train through the pain and little by little he got farther away from the bodybuilding. He just kept getting farther out there. Last time I seen him he was smaller than we was in high school. Last few things I’ve heard about him he’s been in and out jail. Looking super old and broke down for our ages. Not sure where I was going with this other than the over training ruined his bodybuilding career because of the pain pills.

ThTs the mentality that told one trip down hill with two falls Ns slightly sprained ankle was enough for my skiing career

Hey @Poppy did you see the video I posted yesterday it was on similar subject. You know I keep thinking about it and I know I’ll want to compete at least one more time but I’m now think late fall or sometime next winter. Let me enjoy first summer with my girl. She like to do weekend getaways but is very active on them and I want to be there with her for some of them. This could all change if for some reason she decides the relationship isn’t working. It’s more likely we get married this year than break up. I’ve almost got her to break down and admit she loves me a little.

I did.

My opinion…I agree with your decision. You don’t want to wreck a great relationship or maybe THE relationship over a total.

I’m thinking the golf course has ruined relationships too.

Once again my opinion… if you step back and look… she’s got a kid and a lot to lose along with a big responsibility. She might be proceeding with extra caution.

For sure and she has had a lot of trauma in her life. It’s already decided I’m not even meeting her kid till we are engaged. She knows I’m in this for right reasons her words not mine is she has nothing to offer me so she knows I’m not trying to use her. We aren’t sleeping with each other so it’s not like I’m there for sex. She makes me happy enough even without that so I’ll patiently wait till she’s ready. I almost ended things over this but realized she’s worth the wait. The fact I enjoy her company no sex means things will likely work long term.

I feel the subject of this post just as much as I feel having cheat meal days. Got to have it to fully enjoy it all. Life and training… Great thread subject…

With that being said, these last couple days I did have some pizza…and some eggos…and some crinkle cut French fries… Dipped them bastards in some nacho cheese sauce thank you very much…

Hearts eggs all the holiday editions are elite but I think the hearts have most peanut butter to chocolate ratio. Also speaking of time off of gym. It seems Monday my log will start time to get back after no excuses if I’m tired I go I’ll get sleep on off days
