Thoughts on doing hypertrophy programs periodically

So to guys more focused on the the big three. What are your thoughts on doing a more hypertrophy focused program to gain size and give the cns a bit more a break for 8 weeks here and there. I’ve seemed to come stagnant on dead’s and squats at points and think adding size to legs wouldn’t hurt and I would come back a bit more fresh for hitting big numbers

I know RP’s weight lifting (oly lifting), and powerlifting programs both have Hypertrophy phases in them. I know I’m biased toward their programming, but I also don’t see much programming backed by as much science as theirs is… so I’d say it’s a good idea.

Hypertrophy and time under tension both have helped me see good lean gains. I also believe from personal experience that time under tension with lighter weight has helped strengthen my tendons and ligaments especially in problem areas. What are your thoughts on that @Dirtnasty @NeuroRN

There’s studies (wished i could remember where I read them) that prove that muscular strength is longer lasting than strength gained from the cns firing.

The point being is take some time and train hypertrophy… get muscle size…then muscle strength… then train your cns to fire efficiently and you have the optimal combination for powerlifting.

Gotcha. I figured if the goal was to move more weight that strengthening the softer tissues would support his desire to go hypertrophy. Especially with his shoulder. Last thing big guy needs is to get injured if he plans on competing this fall.

Ahhh I didn’t see that connection. My apologies sir. Your question is in fact spot on. I thought you were just coming out of left field with your own question. Carry on! @Rusty

Ausby Alexander was a Marine. He was also a world class powerlifter. When I was in the Marines he would tour the bases and hold non-formal seminars in the base gym. He lifted in the 164 class i believe.

The one thing that sticks in my head was his ligaments in his elbows interior of his brachial. They were thick as your thumb when he was lifting. He was a phenomenal lifter.

Go getcha a cup brother. You’re a high performance machine and need high octane gas.

No worries brother. Especially if you ain’t had coffee yet. I can see why you thought that by how I worded it. I am not the best at articulating thoughts. Plus I am well known for hijacking threads. Not intentionally ever. I just get spacey sometimes 😂

Haha. Me too. Half the time @Bigmurph dont even leave me messages anymore when he edits. He knows I am spacey and he knows the second I see what he edited I know right away I’m like fu** I did it again!!
