I am getting my son a hunting rifle for his birthday/Christmas present. My mom and dad are going on with me as it is an expensive gift

I am looking at Browning .270 BAR. A bolt or Xbolt.

There is a real nice BAR on sale that is used and looks flawless. I heard the bolt action is more accurate then the Automatic but for hunting within 300 yard shots max is there that much difference? @John @JB_rD81 @Cluster or anyone else that may have knowledge of these guns. @NeuroRN your a hunter. Ever use these guns.

I’m not much of a rifle hunter. I use a shotgun for turkey and ducks, the bow for everything else.

I know when I was a kid I was more careful with my shot placement with bolt action bc I couldn’t just squeeze another round if I missed.

I’m no where near knowledgeable enough to have a real opinion.

Funny thing is,BAR use to stand for Browning Automatic Rifle.I also despite being a infantry Marine, don’t have a lot of knowledge, yea I’ve shot m-16a million times and my 30-30 but bows n shotguns I’m most experienced at. At 300 yeah I’d want that bolt, it feels good.

Have you ever shot a BAR its fucking bad ass 30-06 full automatic it rips anything you point it at apart. It also even being ww1 old it still shot perfectly didn’t jam once the whole time we were shooting. They don’t make anything like they used to

I honestly couldn’t believe that we didn’t have a single issue. We took breaks let it cool we even cleaned around half way through because we were putting alot of metal down range and it started building up but it never jammed.
I shot an uzi full sized and it jammed the 3rd clip going through 25rd mags.
We all know that ak47 doesn’t jam either I had 3 made by different makers one was a saga and I never cleaned any of them once and 1000s of rounds at a time we would put through those they were all semi but same amount of build up and heat. Those guns were built to survive anything lol

Hahahahaha. Then you can’t miss maybe kill two or three deer at once. But how much meat you think we will have lol.

That xbolt is a fine rifle I own a .338 win mag xbolt it is a precision machine. I will say this any of the three are a great choice my dad shot a .270 bar before he passed my son owns the rifle now it is a great gun too. Browning is top of the food chain in my opinion. You wont go wrong in whatever choice you make

Thanks brother. I think I am gonna get the ABolt. That older Belgium made BAR is sexy as hell. But I think he will be forced to make a perfect shot with the bolt vs having the option for a quick repeat if he fucks up the first one lol. .338 is a big ass round bro. Is it the same as a .338 lapua @Hotrod480

@Rusty sorry I didn’t get a chance to respond sooner. I personally would always chose a bolt over semi auto. Reason being, I had a very nice, very reliable Browning Auto 5 16 gauge when I was younger, a teenager, it was an amazing gun, it was my transition from a single shot 20 gauge to a multi shot gun. I loved that gun, and for my last few youth seasons it was amazing, however when I switched to hunting adult shotgun seasons in Iowa, I started to have issues. Moisture would always cause jams on the 2nd or 3rd shot. I loved that gun, and I’ll probably never find one again, they’re a collectors item now, but I sold it and bought a 12 gauge Citori, and another 870 mag 12 gauge. Semi Autos have too many moving parts for me, and like you said in a previous post, the bolt action will help make your boy be a little more accurate, rather than just click click click… that’s why I like muzzle loaders, you gotta kill it with one shot!
