Learning new things and including son...BJJ

All,

I’ve been on the fence with this a bit lately as I’ve wanted to add something both new to me and to also involve my oldest son, who is 12. I don’t think you are ever too old to pick up a new hobby or learn something new. A friend of mine who owns a gym not too far from me has become very involved with BJJ and currently competes. My son who has been awesome at baseball, for whatever reason has lost interest…part of it I blame the covid situation as last year wasn’t an option. I strongly believe it is important for him to at least find some type of sport so he can learn the lessons of failure and success, as well as the social aspect. My friend told me there is really only one gym he’d highly recommend in my area for BJJ training which also provides youth sessions. I’ve talked to my son about it and seems he definitely has an interest to try it out. My understanding is you learn a ton, both mental and physical with proper training and instruction. Considering making an appointment to visit the gym later this early summer with my son to learn more about the courses.

I believe I’ve read a few posts about others that currently include BJJ training in addition to their lifting routine and am curious to hear thoughts about introducing him to this and also myself, as well as the benefits you personally have had with this discipline. May be a great father/son experience as we both will essentially be learning from scratch, as long as the course times match up fairly well.

I don’t know anything about bjj but I don’t see a downside to anything you would do as father/child together.

Stay involved stay engaged stay interested.

We do have a couple members involved in BJJ I believe just like you do sports or something social even if its art or music with friends. Sports of course I believe being the best choice.

I’m a fan of Krav Maga type of guy. BJJ is great one on one training. But for defense the whole BJJ thing is OK. I sent my daughter and my wife at the time to classes. Well for my daughter it was good.

Never did bjj but like many my age it got my interest into martial arts out side of karate and tkd. I’m more of wrestling and catch kind of guy. As I tell people bjj is for the kid getting bullied catch is for the kid who wants to be the bully hahahha

I think BJJ is an awesome martial art. It’s evolving as a sport and if he gets really into it there’s nearly an encyclopedia’s worth of info about it (which is why I never really started diving into it… I get obsessed with hobbies).

With that being said I’d make sure that whatever gym you guys end up going to is a gym that has structure. One of the complaints I’ve heard is that some bjj gyms kind of have just an open rolling session with practice. Which can be fun but won’t get you in my opinion as good as if you ran drills consistently.

Thanks everyone…will plan to check it out more over the couple months. From what my friend told me who knows the head trainer, the classes are very structured with a lot of one on one instruction time.
