I’ve got a long time friend/mentor that I’ve looked to for guidance in life issues and for training advice. I’ve had several over the years, one is dead (another story) this particular one has moved away and I’ve just about lost all contact BUT I have many things tucked away in my head that he’s taught me directly and indirectly. Actually @Kad1 reminds me of a young him… built the same…same hair or lack of it…same attitude…my old friend is mid to late 60’s and is a total badazz.
One thing that drove him crazy was the phrase “working out”. He would turn a reddish purple with popping forehead veins when someone in his gym would refer to training as working out.
He was also very smart, his mind was sharp along with being extremely intelligent.
His explanation was as follows:
You can use the phrase “work out” as a pronoun… it’s a thing… no more no less. How was your “work out”? Did you go to your “work out”?
It is NOT a verb! You are NOT “working out”!
What you are doing is “TRAINING”… for a goal! You go to your “work out” to “TRAIN “… to make progress towards your goal…end game… your prize/trophy/medal… the thing you’ve been thinking about day and night…that thing you want so bad that you can taste it.
Are you TRAINING or working out?
