So I’m going to tell a story on myself that is rather embarrassing. My hope is that my story will help others avoid what happened to me.
I ordered some water-based test base to use as a PWO stim and quickly discovered that no matter how much you shake it, it clogs a 27g 1" needle very quickly. So I ordered some 25g 1 1/2" needles. After a workout with my hands still very shaky, I decided to give them a try. Why I didn’t wait until immediately before the next day’s workout, I do not know, but I didn’t. Unfortunately, the test base clogged the 25g needle almost as easily as the 27g needle, and in my effort to force the issue with my shaky hands…you guessed it…the needle snapped off in my leg. Holy fuck. Never had anything like this happen to me. I thought at first the needle had retracted into the syringe and so quickly cut the syringe apart. No dice. Needle was buried in my quad.
So off the ER I go. I have a script for test, so no big deal, but still ridiculously embarrassing. They X-ray me and find the pin, which was not easy, and call in a plastic surgeon to cut it out of me. He digs around for a solid hour trying to get ahold of the damn thing and pull it out, but no dice. And let me tell you how pleasant THAT process was! So he tells me I will just need to live with the pin in my leg unless and until it causes pain, in which case I will need more serious surgery to remove it. Just fucking great. He puts five stitches in me and sends me home.
Nope. Story not over yet. I get home and squat down to pet my dog. Something pokes through the bandage. I think it’s a stich, but nope, it’s the pin! So I grab some pruning shears (yes, the kind you cut bushes with) and grab the damn thing and bend the end so that I cannot disappear back into my leg. Then I use the shears to pull the pin out of my leg. Surprisingly little blood and a lot less pain than I experienced with the plastic surgeon. New bandage and all was well.
Exactly how this happened, I don’t know. My guess is that because the 25g needle was longer, it was not as stiff as the 27g 1" needles I’m used to, and that plus shaky hands and a little too much muscle (ha!) snapped the pin. In any event, the lesson is that it doesn’t matter how many times you may have pinned yourself, you have to be careful and deliberate because crazy shit CAN happen. And it did to me. I will have a small scar on my leg to prove it.
Carry on.
