It’s not uncommon for what you described. Sounds like you had , for the lack of a better term, a giant blood blister caused by the pin for whatever reason. When “burst” that blood was distributed and your body is trying to dissipate it.
Similar in concept to smashing a finger and that blood under the nail takes forever to go away.
If dr said it’s just blood then it’s your body trying move it along…
