Been up for a couple of hours as usual. Drank coffee and messed with porky pup.

I will confess…at the time of my enlistment… I was a young kid (18). Homeless, to hardheaded to move back in with mom, friends were dead end, auto manufacturers had tens of thousands laid off, the economy was much the same as it is now, Vietnam had just ended, Iran had taken over our embassy and took our citizens prisoner, Russia had invaded Afghanistan…I was hungry and needed direction. Went to our little mall and joined the Marine Corps because it was the first door on the right and there was a big Gunny standing there saying “this is the one you want”.

I, honestly, didn’t know how important military service was…I was motivated and good at it but it was just something I was doing for food, money and an adventure.

I got out after 4 years (should have stayed in…one of the giant mistakes in my life) and embarked on other adventures.

It wasn’t until my 40’s that I realized the global impact the military has. I was just one young sergeant in a big machine but the machine is what keeps peace and order on this planet.

I will also add…

To the non-vets… we don’t look down on you or think less of you. Nothing of the sort. It was a choice we made of our own free will.

Also, the interservice bickering we do is for us only…we DO respect each other and the rivalry is just something we do. Everyone has a place in the machine…to serve and protect.

One thing you never hear is objections to toxic masculinity when the barbarians are at the gate.

Long long before the stylized movies about snipers and such…this fella was dropping bad guys.

Great post brother! Sad thing is we only get 1 day out of the year, yet all the other “groups” get whole months. Everyday is Veterans Day in my eyes and I can’t speak for everyone, but I know serving in the Army was and will be one of my greatest accomplishments and proudest moments in my life!

Happy Vertand day. Ton of admiration for All of those who served. Regardless of why you joined it takes something to sign on the dotted line and sacrifice for a greater cause. Thankful for all the vets for helping us be able to enjoy the freedoms we have.
