My intro to Jiu Jitsu

20180802_200616

Got my own set of ear guards

Haha. Don’t look so cool, but they will def protect those ears. Bad in that you’ll find that your head gets stuck in triangles easier, but will help you focus on stacking rather than pulling your head out with brute force

Man, my ear is sore as fuck.
Full blown pin cushion. 2 pokes a day for 6 days now.
Still a little puffy but not much draining out today.

Gives me a little nausea and vertigo after jabbing.

LOL… Well aren’t you creative. That had to be your wife’s idea because it makes too much sense to come from you.

Doesn’t seem like the headgear is helping that much. If you get concerned, take some time off. Icing before draining will promote vasoconstriction, and in conjunction with compression help minimize re-filling. Whatever is in there after 4-6 weeks…you’re keeping

My ear has not had any new trauma since Monday, it just keeps getting new fluid build up.
A little less every day though.
It was weird, today when I put the clothespin on the middle part of the ear it pushed the fluid to the upper part.
Like squeezing a balloon.
Pinned the upper part and it squished back down

Hit my over training limit I think.
4 training sessions in 3 days was just too much. yesterday I was feeling so weak and off balance.
Tapped out way more than I’m used to.

At 50 I want to train more often than my body will accommodate. Dangit. Wish I could roll every day but looks like 3 or 4 days a week is gonna be my cut off.

When we train we usually drill for half an hour and then get in a solid hour of rolls. When I crashed yesterday it was pretty apparent to me and to much or the delight for my training partners.

Diggin’ your passion @Burrr. I know exactly how you feel. If I could I would be at the sparring gym or my dojo every single day. You know yourself well but just make sure you are getting plenty of electrolytes. The type of training and work you are putting in takes a hard toll on the electrolytes.

I’m 7 months in to my jiu jitsu Journey. One stripe on the white belt and definitely feeling like I’ve made progress. Biggest breakthrough so far is learning how to Pace myself.
I’ve got a handful of submissions that I can hit pretty often. The easy ones to remember are the ones that are right in front of your face, the Ezekiel choke is it good one for me. I also hit the key lock pretty often.
I usually start our Open Mat rolls from the bottom of Mount or side control so I’ve been getting a lots of practice with my escapes and sweeps.
Today when I was rolling with the brown belt instructor it was kind of funny he was able to keep me in side control while simultaneously instructing another student rolling next to us.
I put on a few pounds, sitting at 190 for 5:11 tall. Probably as lean as I’ve ever been. my cardio has really improved, still functioning pretty well after an hour of sparring.
My weak points are still the moves that take a couple of steps to set up. I can muscle my way through simple things, but that doesn’t work when the guys are strong or experienced.
Still need to work on my arm bars, and finishing leg triangles. I get them set up but not fast enough to finish them.
This last month has been lots of fun, things are starting to click. Finally able to remember some of the things I’ve drilled over and over and over again.

Hey Gang,
a little update on my BJJ progress.
I’m going to be at the one year mark in a week or 2. Things have come a really long way.
I get done with training now and feel pretty good, 11 months ago I limped in the front door after class. I’ve trained right around 100 days this year, no big injuries… sore ribs and some low back pain.
for most of the last year Ive been starting rolls from crappy positions, bottom mount, bottom side control and in guard. This has really paid off for me, I can pass guard pretty easily on most white and blue belts. I’ve got some good escapes from side control and I’m pretty fast to sweep a guy who is in mount.

I absolutely prefer no gi training. I train no gi a little more often… Grabbing collars really fires up my arthritis. I’ve got my favorite subs, mostly the ones I started hitting months ago that are strength related. I love that Americana… As soon as I get mount I start looking for an arm to attack. If I dont score the americana I usually end up getting a gift wrap and can often turn that into a back take.

Another big improvement has been my cardio. I seldom gas out now, but that took me a really long time to figure out. It was mostly my style of spazzing out when in a bad spot instead of conserving gas for a calculated move.

Absolutely love the new sport. Like lifting, seeing results keep the motivation level high. I swear that my noob gains came way quicker with lifting than with BJJ.

Much respect brother jujitsu is serious and is a great way to train and you also get to fight so you can’t beat that.
Good luck moving forward wish you the best brother

In the beginning you tend to get those little freak out moments and the fact that you lose that extra power from standing is really a mind fuck at first. Give it another 6 months to a year and you’ll be just as strong off your back as you are standing. It takes time to build that strength and the fine motor muscles of the upper back and shoulders but eventually you’ll start to realize just how string you’ve become. Especially against newer opponents.
That fear of tapping and or getting caught will start to dissipate more and more. You will start to be able to control not only the physical aspects like breathing but the mental that tends to block that idea of the next movements. It’s odd how it all starts to take shape but it does. If you can let go of the ego and pride of just getting caught you will become a much more relaxed practitioner. The more relaxed you are, the clearer you think and the easier you breath.
I also love no gi myself but it’s important to train gi whenever you have a chance. A street fight with a person wearing clothing, especially jackets and hoodies, will feel much more natural if you train gi. It had been years since I trained gi but when I got into the USMC and started training in the Marine Corps Martial Arts program more actively, I had to get reaccustomed to gi style training because we trained mainly in our cammie uniforms when training juijitsu.

I had to change up the way I roll when we wear the GI. I used to just grab some collar and hold on for dear life. Now I pick my grips and let go of them if Im fighting too hard for them… unless its about to finish a choke.
And your right… on the rare chance that I ever use my bjj for real it will probably be with someone in a jacket or hoodie. Average annual temp here is 32

Yeah it can really start to wear on your wrists if you can’t “feel” where or when the release should be. I typically use an underhand grip for forearm or tricep/shoulder control and manipulation but unless I’m going for a choke I avoid the collar. I’ve had my wrists royally f’d up over the years from other martial arts and practicing joint manipulation and chin na so I tend to avoid things that further screw them up in practice.
