Joe Weider was famous for showing up to shoots to oil up the bodybuilders. He did the same with Arnold and “sponsored” him. Even his wife said she found it strange he would travel to a photoshoot to just to rub oil on the bodybuilders for the shoot. If you didnt let Joe touch you, you werent getting into his magazines.

The industry has always been heavily sexualized with predators at all levels. It was just something never discussed really.

Back in the 90s there was an IFBB pro and judge in my area that would always try to touch me at the gym. He was openly gay and many joked around with him about it. But at 18 I was even uncomfortable and avoided doing any shows knowing he was a local NPC judge and seeing how he was with guys there.

Yep. They kept him happy so they’d stay in the magazines. Rumours he did more with certain bodybuilders but no one ever admitted to it. Before his bodybuilding magazines took off he ran a gay publication that failed.
