Observations in the gym

I guess with summer coming there’s more people showing up to the gym. Just a few thoughts based off what I saw today….

1. Check your ego.
So many people trying to lift with their ego. They see the person next to them lifting X amount of weight so they try to prove a point and add weight when they shouldn’t. Their form is the first to go, along with the inability to control the weight through the whole movement.

2. Half reps don’t count
I guess this should really be 1a, but damn. So many people loading up shit to only move halfway through their range of motion. This leads to imbalances and weak spots in your training. Control the negative and “explode” through the movement, then control the weight back down. Moving as fast as possible and using every accessory muscle to move the weight is damn near pointless.

3. Don’t be dick.
Wipe your shit off. Don’t super set with 19 things and get mad when someone takes the cable machine you have been “using” for the last hour. Be respectful.

Lastly, don’t fucking worry about what anyone else is doing. If you wanna talk in the gym, go for it. But the comparison needs to stop with the person in the mirror. Everyone is on their own journey. Some just starting out. Some recovering from injuries. Some in a deload week. Whatever. The point is… they don’t matter. Not one of them. Only you, and your work.

Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

There is a 15 at gym who doesn’t rerack and used horrible form that only goes about half reps cuae the weights to heavy. I’ve told him multiple times that he needs to lower the weight and do full range. Partials have a place like using super heavy weights on bottom of lat raise but you also have to add i the top portion with lighter weight as well when you don row and only hit the first 1/4 of movement you’ll never build anything

I agree. I should have made that disclaimer. Partials have their place… when they are intentional. Unintentional ego partials are worthless.

I’ll never understand why kids don’t listen to someone who obviously has their training dialed in more than them.

I would have soaked up everything someone your size said to me as a teenager.

Another kid asked me yesterday about pl competitions. And I actually saw him take advice right away when I told him to better perform I’m his dead and squat. And I told him your never to weak to compete it’s really you vs yourself.

I work out at a highschool gym mostly. Lots of ego with teenagers. The Hmong and Mexican kids seem to be very respectful and love it if a big guy is willing to teach them a thing or two. The other kids however don’t give a shit and think anyone who tries to help them is a loser. Couple days ago I saw a Hmong kid deadlift 455 pounds sumo style. He weighs about 150. I was watching him very closely. His form was outstanding except his shoulders were too far forward. I gave him a fist bump and congratulated him and pointed out his grip is killer strong. His face lit up with joy. I shared with him deadlift pauses to fail with lighter weight and how it would help increase his accessory strength like the shoulders. He listened very carefully and was grateful. Love kids like that!!

Well said … I see this every time I go into my gym . I want to say something to them but I just go in get my work done and I’m out that bitch while they are still there being dumb lol

The one that gets me most of the time is leg extensions. I think there’s very few people in MOST gyms that should be using a full stack on that. It’s all grip it and rip it, explode up, ass popping out of the seat and let the Weight free fall down. I don’t have PHD quads…. But I’d say they are doing alright… and If I don’t need the full stack… chances are you don’t either little 16 year old child.

Had a teenage girl here doing squats with super bad form and she was being very dangerous. Dropping down as fast as she could stopping and popping back up very quickly. I could feel the discs in my back compressing. I did not walk up and talk to her about it. I went to one of the coaches that was there and pointed it out to him before she hurt herself. I told him I was not about to walk up to a young girl that I don’t know and give advice. There was a big guy here with tattoos and he tried to do that and it turned into a shit storm. He is a great guy and had nothing but the right intentions. Problem is the girl got scared. Do not try and give advice to young girls in the gym!!!

I’ll stick to the rage cage…thank you very much.

#1 rule in the rage cage is leave your ego at the door. It’s just training… no world records or camera crews.

#2 don’t do anything stupid. You can hurt yourself or more importantly ME!

One day I’m coming to train in the rage cage.

As long as back stays tight it’s not really that dangerous of squat technique there are guys that do that I. Comp they they use that bounce to get out of hole easier. Now I. Think there should either be pause on squat when at depth or they should take it out of bench just keep everything consistant
