Thoughts on Coaches, Trainers, Motivation

Been along time coming for this one and Id like to stress why I think coaches are important. First let me start by saying when I was younger I was a personal trainer for awhile. I eventually quit not for lack of clients but becuase I got tired of training people that weren’t 100% into it. I felt like most people that hired me did so just to talk to someone and be able to tell people they have a trainer.

Now years went by and as I progressed in bodybuilding, I became a member of several forums and went on to hire a very well known coach in this sport before he became really famous in the industry. A few of you know who it is. It was expensive to me at the time and I debated whether or not to spend the money on roids or to spend it on the coach. I opted for the coach.

What I learned was valuable to me as having someone from the outside be able to look at me from a different perspective and what I needed to do to reach my goals. I learned new ways to eat that changed my diet habits completely. It saved me money in the long run as I also learned better cycles and variations to my training and frequency that helped me achieve my goals faster and better. Overall I was happier and had someone to keep me in check and motivated.

I was on the forums for motivation and made good friends in the communities. It was a great time in general and learned the value of what having a coach truly is.

Now people say “why should I have a coach?”, well the answer to that is how serious do you want to reach a certain goal? Theres a reason why professional bodybuilders still use coaches and any SERIOUS athlete would. I would say a good coach can make you or getting a bad coach can break you.

Coaching is an investment into yourself. Now if you say “Im not serious and I just like to hang around the gyms and bullshit” or you dont have goals then you probably dont need it. But if you have the drive and desire to reach a goal then it makes all the difference in the world.

Now even if you dont want to have a coach you should still make forums a regular part of your life. Being able to learn, help others and have people keeping accountability for you is great to stay motivated.

But regardless you need to take advantage of the help and insight others give you. Ive seen people waste time, destroy themeselves and drop out of the sport all together because they didnt listen to others.

Logs are an excellent way to keep accountability for your training. @Fitraver log is valuable to others and a way to keep up on what hes learning and experiencing. Even tho I dont comment as much I still read up on all his entries.

@josh is in the No Excuse Gains Contest and Im sure what he learns thru out the contest will be invaluable. Big thanks to @SemperFi and @PHD for working this.

Thank you so much trengod for writing this up! It really does make me more happy, excited, thrilled, etc about all that is going to be involved with the process! I have explained on a daily basis to phd that I am so eager to get going. After following a lot of advice that i have been reading on UGM a “coach” is and was difficult for me to make the decision, both finacially and was I willing to give myself up to the advice of someone else… I thought about it for days, and came to the conclusion that finacially turned into a need for me, and need the advice from someone who knows what they are doing. I followed phd for days reading everything and i mean everything he was writing and commenting on, and decided that he was the one that would push, would shove, would motivate, would educate, get me to where i should be. I highly expect great things from this great man @PHD for many months to come, and I want to thank everybody at UGM for helping me make the decision to get involved and do the right thing and get me a coach for training. I have no doubt in my mind that everything that I learn from him will always and forever benefit me in all aspects of my life from the dedication to commitment to respect to giving in to knowing I need to learn! So Many Many Many thanks to @SemperFi for help pushing me along in learning alot of things also, @Bigmurph for always answering some of my pointless questions but having the knowlege to educate me, and @TG for being tough on me sometimes but its needed! Thanks UGM for being my place to call Home. Also Just so everybody knows also my wonderful wife is so supportive of this and is also been my support system going into it @mommie2008

“BlackWeasel” is the definition of people fucking themselves up by not knowing what they are doing.

Blackweasel was on bodybuilding dot com years ago where he actually posted a thread of his “bulk”

Bodybuilding dot com is a horrible site to get advice from. Its mostly kids and people that dont know any better knocking off most the time.

Anyways this kid completely fucked himself up and never got the results from his “cut” he claimed to be going on. From posting gym clips daily to posting video game clips daily…

Yeah shit didnt workout like he intended lol. Started calling himself “strongweasel” then changed his name back lol.

My first experience with ‘hired’ help was not a good experience because I was just arrogant enough to think I knew more than they did. Several years later I rehired the same coach, he was after all a friend of mine, and I could not believe how much he had learned in a short three years. 😉

The reality he knew from day one what I needed to do to reach my goals. I was just completely oblivious to the fact that I was unreceptive to the idea that maybe their was someone out there that actually knew ‘me’ better than I knew myself.

The second experience was much more productive than my first experience because I used a bit of blind faith and had learned a little bit about following a method. I carried the lessons I learned forward from those experiences and believe I ended up where I am now because I was willing to listen to others despite what I ‘think’ I know.

I like coaches who have walked the walk and are not just simply educated. Whether it was mixed martial arts or bodybuilding I want to be reliant on a coach that can bring real life experience to the table with just enough education that will maximize the results of their experience with science.

I’ve had my fair share of bad coaches myself. They are out there and usually have the big local following like blind sheep. It’s sad. It’s ok to ask your coach why? it helps you learn and helps you understand his thoughts. If a coach tells you don’t question me just follow what I say well that’s a red flag.

Great post.
