Are Bodybuilders Athletes?

Before I ever got into weightlifting/amateur bodybuilding, I was a distance runner and also competed in triathlons (not just Iron Man events) and I classified myself as an athlete.

But I am not sure I could classify myself as an athlete doing this. My wife competed in both crew and bodybuilding and she classified herself as an athlete when on crew, but not bodybuilding, so who the hell knows the answer.

I wouldn’t necessarily Call them athletes and I really don’t consider it a sport. I don’t really consider powerlifting a sport either but I consider it competition. Sport to me has offense and defense.

I’m of the Kenny Powers mindset of “i play real sports im not trying to be the best at exercising” 😂. But I fall into that category as well so fuck it, I used to be an athlete, now I just lift. I think if you’re competing then yes absolutely you’re an athlete, if not, it’s a just a great hobby.

Sport is defined as such:

An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

According to Webster’s Dictionary, an athlete is someone who is trained or gifted in exercises or contests that require physical agility, stamina, or strength, or who participates in a sport, exercise, or game that requires physical skill.

The problem with all of this is that people really want to compare bodybuilding to beauty pageants. So if we say bodybuilding is about presentation and beauty pageants are about presentation then we would have to consider beauty pageants athletes as well which is fucking stupid… … it’s a stupid fucking comparison… I guess all these lazy ass kids we talk about are athletes too… Xbox athletes… Compare beauty pageants to bodybuilding wtf

Pretty good man, enjoying the warm weather, spending time with the fam, and still in pursuit of chiseled Greek dog status lifting 😂.How you doing? I hope you’re still crushing cheese steaks for breakfast once in a while.

I don’t think anyone is comparing the work of the two, I think the comparison lies in the determination of the winner being opinion based rather than upon a performance metric (touchdowns, goals etc.)

They are both evaluated upon a set list of criteria and judged by non competing parties and ranked accordingly and a winner is selected.

They are pretty fucking similar hahaha most powerlifters I know call body building a beauty contest.

No we would have to consider them both about presentation. Using your logic, prize hogs at the fair must now be considered athletes….

Bbing… beauty pageant….all so very subjective. Heck even pling has 3 judges that can be extremely subjective ie… high squats…bench lockouts…

Who knows… all that matters is your number 1 in my book!

Sorry I brought some online reading into the forum with that statement and that was the basis of the argument I was reading…if they’re both beauty pageants then they’re both athletic. And for the sake of bodybuilding and for these bitch ass body building haters… Hard work is put in to the sport of bodybuilding… this isn’t buy yourself a pair of fake titties and a Brazilian butt lift and all this cosmetic shit that everybody in the world applauds but don’t let anybody find out you’re taking steroids though… Because that would be cheating and a pair of fake titties and fake ass is not… This isn’t the season’s over like professional football or basketball and take 3 to 4 months off type shit. It’s fucking bodybuilding 24/7 job… Not fucking pro ball we’re dudes are smoking weed or snorting a line of cocaine before the game… All bodybuilders whether beginning amateur or professional are athletes

Nah bodybuilding is a beauty pageant for men. It’s subjective by who looks better to the judges. Powerlifters and strongman are athletes. Winner is the strongest in their class that’s not subjective. It’s a fact.

Beauty pageant contestants take classes. They workout. They diet. They practice posing. All the similar things bodybuilders competing do.

Bodybuilding typically has off season lol. No one competes year around.

Training and not competing is just a hobby lol.
