I’ve been seeing the belt squat attachments and stand alone machines for quite some time now and it always intrigued me. I’ve never seen one (except on the web) let alone used one.
Last year I dove into poppys treasures (my pile of crap/junk) and pieced together a pretty good apparatus for a rack attachment. It ended up working nearly perfect and it’s ugly which makes it way cooler. I did get a spud heavy duty adjustable belt for my birthday so thats the pretty thing on it. Fyi. That belt is perfect. Very comfortable and functional.
Attached below is the pics I’ll be referring to.
I found that putting the belt attach point directly below me… between my knees is the best. That way the apparatus can’t pull me forward up on my toes or push me back on my heels off balance.
You can see rusty is a little far back with the cable in front of him…pulling him forward rather than straight down. You can see his heels coming off the ground in the hole. I believe if he was to “straddle” the cable and keep it as near vertical as possible; it will work better. I know he’s feeling his way around a new piece of equipment and experimenting.
Kind of hard to see in my pic but the snap link when standing is directly below me and my feet remain flat in the hole.
I’ve been experimenting with different foot placements and have found that if I go to a couple reps shy of failure at a narrow quad dominant stance… open my stance up to a medium wide stance with toes pointed out a little and do 6 or so more reps… my whole lower body is lit up. I found the belt squat is very forgiving in the way that mid set I can change my stance…easily.
I also found that placing the belt very low on the hips is way more comfortable and functional. I can only comment on the spud belt…it is heavy duty but pliable enough to form fit without undue discomfort.
The pics of me were taken out of a video so they might not capture full extension.
