Blood Glucose Monitoring

My insurance provider has provided me with a glucose monitor. It looks pretty fancy. It comes with a lifetime supply of lancets. My doc has not had me monitoring my glucose. I’m going to give it a shot just cuz I’m kind of a geek with these things and think it would be interesting to see how my body handles food intake in relation to meds time of day etc.

Below is a few things I have floating around in my head.

Check immediately upon waking in am.

Sometime after breakfast

Sometime after morning meds

Sometime midday after lunch

Prior to and after training

Prior to bed

I’m thinking this should give me a baseline to gauge my glucose levels off of. Maybe record how I feel at the time of monitoring and bounce all that off of food intake.

Guys please jump in with any suggestions.

That little black case is chocked full of stuff also. It was delivered last night and I, literally, just opened it… I haven’t drilled down to actually using the thing yet.

With not being on insulin, your regimen looks spot on. Fast AM glucose is a biggie.

When I was really on top of my glucose monitoring I would check before and after meals to see what spiked my glucose the most etc. it’s fascinating but goddamn that’s a lot of finger sticks and I need my fingers at work hahah

Haha I was thinking the same thing after I posted this…. Prick prick prick!!!

I might do it for a couple weeks to get a baseline being’s i eat the same basic grub everyday.

Then whittle it down to ad hoc or if I’m introducing a new food that I might work into the regular rotation.

Sometimes I’m just a bit to geeky/curious about this stuff but the human body is just so amazing… gotta see what makes it tick.

I think it’s a great plan! Especially noting how you feel at what glucose level. It’s just gonna make those fingers raw!

I say this kind of sarcastically and kind of jokingly although not funny (my way of dealing with it)

My hands are so mauged up I’m thinking it won’t make things too much worse! Haha

Rough housing with the guard corgi last night and this morning.

Little B for sure! Keeps the ups fedex drivers on their toes along with garbage truck and gaggle of geese.

She guards from indoors… when actually meeting another human she’s a sweetheart.

The geese are another story…she goes on them. Chases them into the pond. Haha

AM, 2 hours after you post workout meal, and before bed or 2 hours after last meal …3 should give you a good idea how you insulin release or insulin sensitivity is. I used to get a post -prandiol (fancy for post meal) surge of insulin(I would guess) I would train in AM, Go home and have a shake , sleep , then have my biggest meal w/ carbs a couple hours before work. I would end up a bit foggy , sweating…I thought is was just thermic effect of food but as I tested my blood glucose it was somewhat low 65, 70 and made me feel not well. I would drink a sugar pop(coke, Pepsi and be fine) I always did better with smaller frequent meals. I kept a night schedule and 4pm was just a good time for a large meal. I could lay down, etc. if your not correcting you Blood Glucose. Am and before bed are good, along with a couple after you have carbs to see how the different ones affect you.

I check mine in the am only before food.

I still haven’t figured out how the “Dawn Effect” effects me. Sometimes its over 100 sometimes its high 80s.

Also, I tried tracking thru out the day but i eat so regularly that it seemed skewed.

So, in conclusion, I have no idea how metformin actually helps my blood glucose levels and I am a bad person to ask.

I am just going to rely on my A-1C tests I guess.

Ima going to eat a donut now as punishment.

Blahahaha Blahahaha

Thanks for the reply. I’m going to get a general cross section of my days/weeks and play with it.
