My dad was in the 14th commando group in Vietnam. He was awarded the Vietnam cross which is the biggest honor from the Vietnamese. His record showed only his date of entry and his date of leaving and his position. Everything else “never happened”. He won’t even talk to me about it. As a kid I remember him in a body brace we called him 3CPO. Like star wars. He saved a whole platoon from what I hear. VA didn’t give him 100% until he visited one in Wisconsin instead of Detroit. I think he was around 55. He also got back pay so that helped a lot. As a kid we were on welfare cause he couldn’t keep a job. Sometimes he couldn’t get out of bed for days. And back then welfare was peanut butter eggs milk and cheese.
