The Great Salmon Tabacle

So let me start by saying this will prolly be Mr Keto @SemperFi’s wet dream so I full expect an answer from him, but please anyone who knows their fish weigh in…

So I made the decision that I wanted to change my pwo meal from a burger and bread to a salmon and some rice. I’m trying to figure out my digestion issues and rice and chicken doesn’t give me any issues but I don’t want chicken for a 4th time haha. So i decided I’d give salmon a try cuz it had fat content I needed like the burger. Would be a simple swap to keep my
Macros the same.

So fast forward to me at Walmart looking at salmon. I don’t know shit about fish, but I know not to get farm raised and to not get wild caught. So I’m looking at the label on the Walmart brand wild caught vs the other brands and I get very confused. Why does the Walmart brand only have 2g fat for 4 oz when the others have 15+ some up to 19. That’s sketchy as fuck right? Is it an example of never eat Walmart brand fish?!? Is it because it was pink salmon vs another kind?

I figured something had to be up with that and was too sketched out to get it. What I actually ended up doing was getting a wild caught white fish, which is much cheaper and then will just add a healthy fat oil on top of the fish and rice to get my fat. I may just stick with that route but curiousiry has me wanting to know what’s up with that salmon lol.

Also bonus points if you can tell me what the best white fishes are and if there’s any to stay away from. I know I’ve read tilapia is a bad one.

I am only going to offer this as an opinion… When it comes to fish do NOT go cheap. High quality wild harvested and avoid anything from China. Sorry to our Chinese sisters and brothers but it is pure dog food.

Cold water fish (salmon, steelhead, ling cod, cod, etc) are typically more fatty. The cold water conditions require them to pack on more fat and are rich in omega-3’s. Steelhead being my favorite.

Best white fish in my opinion are Halibut (expensive), Ling cod, Cod and Mahi Mahi (warm water), and Sea Bass. I would avoid anything farm raised or processed in China.

I would not buy my fish at Wally World. I am lucky because I live on a coast and have access to coastal water and river fish. If you can visit a local fisherman’s market most of these are locally owned and honest business people. Ask questions of their sourcing.

We all live on a budget so I am not dogging anyone for going the more affordable route. This is just the choices I have made for myself.

My wife knows how to fish. She caught three salmon last Saturday. 😉

Thanks for that response brother. Exactly what I expected haha. Great info. Are there and bigger chain places that you’d consider okay for fish. Don’t have a fish market. Trader Joe’s perhaps? They seem to usually have quality stuff.

Do you have access to Costco or Sams Club? I know SC is associated with WW but they are known for some higher quality meats.

You have a Trader Joes but no fish market? That’s crazy. I like TJ because they have some different stuff u can’t find anywhere else but I have never purchased meat from them so I can’t offer an opinion.

I shouldn’t blast WW. My personal opinion of them is based on their business model more than anything else so I reserve the right to retract my statement about not buying fish from them at anytime in the future. 😎

Brother… lead chef’s get their own personal meat from Costco! A roasted chicken for $4.99… Use the carcass and skin to make a protein rich soup broth… never less than two pounds of meat on those birds! Great Deal. Wild Sockeye Salmon in season right now $9.99 per lb, not frozen! Wild Tuna steaks, not frozen. Wild Rock Fish $4.99… not frozen. Wild Alaskan Cod & Chilean Langostino, etc. in the freezer section. Best prices on fresh Halibut but still steep at $20/lb. Wild troll caught Albacore Tuna in the can. FYI- They have salmon patties in the freezer section by Trident. They taste like ass… really bad ass.

What are you thinking little brother?!

Costco hack… Buy beef by the box and ask them to individually wrap your portion sizes. They do it for free and you still get the discounted box price.

They regularly have weekend seafood shows with good deals.

And since you are a pancake lover they have a great deal always on Kodiak protein pancake mix. While you are there get some extra virgin olive oil and Chosen Foods Avocado Oil… and for God’s sake do not forget toilet paper. 😉

In my opinion id go to a local restaurant (of higher quality) and ask to speak with the chef or whichever is in charge of ordering their seafood, and ask them if you could get their sales reps name, number, and company. Give them a call and see if you can buy from them. Sysco has locations for customer pick up and they have terrific seafood purveyors that you may want to check out
