Diary of a middle aged, fat, broken mans comeback

@Poppy, thank you! I was the proud recipient of a total hip replacement back in January. I would like to think that I could get back close to where I was 6 years ago, prior to my injury. I know I’ll never squat heavy again, but push/pull could definitely be in my future…

@JB_rD81. I believe I read that in one of your posts. You still look great. Ahhh you posted xrays. Now I remember. Lord that was ugly. Did it help with pain and mobility and such? Would you do it again? I just had knee surgery and doc said I might be headed for one. Pain isn’t too bad yet. Just picking your brain… fight the good fight brother.

@Poppy, I would most certainly do it again. The pain is completely gone, like from the day of surgery gone… my hip was so bad last year it would keep me awake at night, I could barely lift my leg off the ground, it just wouldn’t move, that was the first thing I noticed was no pain. As far as mobility, for the most part, yes, it’s completely come back. However, there are limitations, I cannot cross my leg too far passed the mid line of my body, I can’t jump and I cannot sprint. I can break parallel on a squat, but not by much. My surgery was a lateral/posterior, it has advantages over full posterior, but is still not as fully functioning as an anterior replacement. If/when but hopefully never, my right hip goes bad, I will not wait to get it fixed. I just hope if it has to happen, I can have the same doctor, he did a pretty damn good job

Cardio at 4 am fucking sucks! Was supposed to go pull tonight, but my wife went and picked up our grandson, so that scratched that. Tomorrow night I’ll go pull. My shoulder/Biceps tendon is still inflamed as fuck, and Advil and Ice are not helping, but using a neutral grip on pressing movements seems to be ok, so I beleive next week I will probably start to program again… might run the cube for 12 weeks, incorporate some speed work with bands and chains, and some hypertrophy work rather than just low reps heavy weight all the time. Might help get my bench back on track and throw a speed bump into my deadlift training to help progress things even farther. Also going to tweak my hormones a little, but I’m waiting on some shit to appear, hopefully soon

Came in tonight, did deadlifts. Warmed up and hit working sets of 280x5, 325x5, 360x2, 395x1, and 445 for a single, FLEW OFF THE FLOOR! I weigh 230 lbs, so I’m 15 lbs away from being back into double body weight pulls… hopefully by my 1 year THR anniversary I’ll be somewhere between 460-500. Finishing up now with 3x8 @ 225, RDLs off the floor, then some light good am’s with the SS Yoke bar

My buddy that owns the gym I go to has two famous uncles, Ed Coan and John Ware (famous in powerlifting). My boy has bad hips just like me, he’s been competing longer than me, and he refuses to get them fixed. He sent me a video the other night of him squatting 500 after not squatting at all for almost 3 years… really lit a fire under my ass! I don’t come from the stock he comes from, but I feel like I still got shit left on the table… I was forced to quit, now I’m fixed, so it’s almost like I’m compelled to prove I still can

Coan and ware…wow. Two legends!

@JB_rD81 Not long ago I would have chopped a pinky off for a deadlift like yours!!!

I don’t know how I missed all this after talking to
You 4 days ago. But wow. Enter the masters. That is a lot of weight very inspiring to see someone at 40 do that kind of weight. Keep kicking ass!!!

@Poppy I would have said the same thing about bench when I was competing. I had elite lifts in squat and DL at both 198 and 220, close in 242, but my bench never eclipsed 350 lbs… and yes, if I can get my deadlift back up into the high 500’s I would consider doing a masters meet, only push pull though. I’d love to do full power but I am still not comfortable squatting without a box on my new hip any heavier than 225 lbs. @Rusty @John @JLee thank you for the encouraging words! My wife tells me I’m stupid, the closer I inch to 500 the more I have to lie, and after the other nights workout, I fully beleive I probably could’ve pulled a little heavier and been fine! Just need this damn bicep tendon/shoulder issue to clear out so I can start benching again

Dont rush it brother. Your almost there. I am hearing lots injury stories all the time from old guys here and at gym. Myself included.

I know what you mean! Closer you get to your goal the more you want to push it! It’s frustrating. Your making awesome progress though, be patient.

My Ben h is so far ahdead of my squats it took a shoulder Injury for my squat to finally eclipse the bench in weight
