Strategy Without Purpose

A quick little background about me… I design and build competition rifles for many individuals in my spare time. Some of my rifles can sell upwards in the $6K range depending on the platform, build and optics. More than anything I want my customer to get their monies worth and I want the rifle to exceed their expectations. If I don’t have the time to do it right the first time when am I going to have the time to do it right the second time.

Many mainstream individuals come to me wanting a custom build and my first question I always ask them is “For what PURPOSE do you want the rifle to perform?” See… There are so many calibers, features and accessories available for AR platforms that an individual can get stuck in the concept of being ‘tacticool’ instead of having a rifle built for a purpose.

I see the use of steroids in the same way. There are so many options and so many accessories we could end up with a build without purpose.

I wont be a hypocrite and tell you I have not experimented and gone off reservation on more than one occasion in my steroid use but I can tell you through all of my mistakes and all of my experience I have come to a few conclusions;
  1. Simple is best - for implementing and accuracy
  2. If the strategy contains more than one purpose the harder and less effective the results
  3. Fewer accessories makes for a more effective build
  4. Aim small, shoot small. Stick to the basic iron sight version until you know exactly what you want to use the build for

Thanks Grrl. OFF TOPIC- I love shooting it up as well at 1200+yds. My go to for that is an SSG3000 chambered in 6.5mm Creedmoor or my Christensen Arms .338 Lapua. The Lapua can actually reach out 2400+ yards but I aint that good. 😉

Love this post Gramps’, I have an old frogman buddy who does the same back in Florida (build competition rifles). The 4 principles you just listed are definitely some things that I have slowly come to realize. Not just in my use of bodybuilding or steroids but in my everyday life as well. I’m glad we have your knowledge and wisdom to learn from.

oh I m not that fancy … I have pws wilde mod 2 with an eotech … nothing crazy … I did just pick up a custom 5.56 build with the short piston …

I had a German ak I miss so bad I got it from a buddy of mine and refinished the wood on it, that thing was beautiful when it was done. I looked online recently to find one like it but damn the prices have went up drastically. sheesh
