I used to always just use a small notebook to track my workouts, exercises, sets, and reps, but over the past year have been using this Gymaholic app that has been great, so just wanted to share my experience. This will sync to a smart watch if you have one (I have an Apple Watch) so it’s easier to just enter your weights/reps in real time from your wrist, though you can just use the app directly from your phone as well. Great features are that there are hundreds of pre-programmed exercises and you can do a filter to search for example, all exercises for chest that use barbells, dumbbells, cables, then choose from the list. It will also show an animation of the movement with a brief description on proper form if you want. You can also create new exercises that may not be in the current list and indicate what are the primary and secondary muscles used for that exercise. It also tracks progress week to week and “lights up” the muscles that were used as well as the time for recovery (this can be adjusted by muscle, but I usually set it for 48-72 hours). Also can create your workouts that can be easily edited (right now mine is set up for PPL).
One downside is that you would need to purchase the full app which I typically never do, but it’s been so beneficial that paying ~$30 per year isn’t too bad and won’t break the bank. It does take a little bit of time to get used to it but once you understand all the features it’s very easy to use. My son uses a free app called Strong that is pretty easy to use and is pretty similar. Unless something has changed you can try the full Gymaholic app for free for a month to see if you like it (very easy to cancel).
Curious what others may use to track workouts aside from a simple notepad. Also just to be clear I have zero affiliation with this app…just sharing as it’s the best smart app I’ve found to date.
Here are a few pics from the app for reference. Certainly is not a necessity but I love tracking data and being able to look back to see progression and other metrics.
