I suspended my (albeit minimal) use of all aas some time ago (DEC 21st). I had a growth (in my groin area) come out of nowhere in October. I had one of my quarterly checkups with my PCP coming up so I figured I would ride it out and have him look at it then. By the time I got to my appointment, it was a oozing bloody mess about the size of the tip of a finger. He immediately referred me. Of course the surgeon immediately scheduled me for surgery and, as routine, sent the growth off for analysis. It came back positive for cancer. I’m not going into any detail on the type etc but of all the different cancers it was a “good” one to have with a very good survivability rate and low malignancy chance. The doc took a pretty good divet out of me to get it all and was a little concerned about the danger close proximity to my lymph nodes down there. Soooo I had several poke n prod sessions, all having a positive (good) prognosis. I am having a contrast scan scheduled that will be the tell all with my lymph nodes.
After surgery…waiting for my scan, I continued to train pretty diligently. Even though I wasn’t on ancillaries (just trt and glutathione)…I trained reasonably hard. Nothing ridiculous but hard enough to make slow progress. The only things I couldn’t do were hip hinge movements because they aggravated the incision. Interesting enough, belt squats didn’t bother the area at all.
A week prior to my scan, I had a root canal. I had it scheduled for 3 months and had forgotten all about it. I decided to go forth with THAT… getting in to take care of this is every bit of a 90 day wait. I wasn’t feeling well the day before but not terrible. I just chalked it up to old guy stuff, a little stress and the surgery. On the way home from the root canal, I called my wife and told her I was going to make a stop and wouldn’t be long. She informed that she had just swabbed positive for covid. She hadn’t been feeling well either but I just chalked that up to old woman complaining. When I got home, I swabbed positive also. GREAT JUST GREAT. We immediately got baby girl out of school to keep her classmates safe.
I then, immediately, did what I thought was the best positive thing with all this cancer, covid and root canal drama hovering around me… yep you guessed it… go to the gym and bench press. Had a great training session.
The next 2 days…was spent relaxing, napping and hydrating. I felt fatigue and symptoms of a common cold nothing too terrible…I’ve had the no $hit full blown diagnosed flu about 4 years ago and that was genuinely miserable…my bout with covid was no where near that. Still managed to get in a little activity/training…and that, I believe, helped mitigate the severity.
Just got back from scan. It was fasted and at 9am. I had to drink a bottle of contrast before bed and on the way to scan. They injected me with iodine (I believe) and took a bunch of scans. Apparently the contrast and iodine is supposed to light everything up for the scan.
Now just waiting for results which are supposed to get back in a day or so.
I’m not looking for pity and not a whoas me guy. Just posting about my bumps in the road. I’m a pretty tough old dude and will be just fine. I’ve got unfinished business on this rock and need to stick around another 30-40 years.
I authored this in real time so it might read differently.
Thank you to the few of UGM members I reached out to… for listening to me blather on about it.
