Does height affect dead lift records? Cause Ed Coan and Thor are not pulling the same distance. And yea I know they’re not competing against each other I’m just curious. Cause I short guy has way less distance to travel in a dead lift comp than a tall guy.

I didn’t answer your question in this post… scroll down.

Yessir it’s all about leverages, appendage lengths.

Take deadlift for example. The diameter of a 45lb plate is pretty much universal so if you’re 6 1/2 feet tall, you’re going to be at a disadvantage to a person that is one foot shorter. Of course there’s appendage length and leverage to take into consideration… lamar gant had extraordinarily long arms and could pull big weight.

Big benchers usually have very thick upper bodies and shorter arms… spotos upper forearm flexed is 20 inches.

Of course there’s no absolutes.

To answer your question. NO. Records in powerlifting are recorded by weight class, equipped/raw, tested/ nontested, age… height has nothing to do with it.

Half-Thor also uses wrist straps, Coan pulled over 9 hundy without. That’s the difference in strong men and powerlifters.

Leverage is an advantage, yes, but leverage only goes so far. Just because you’re 5’5” doesn’t mean you’re going to pull heavier, bench heavier or squat heavier than the next guy. To be able to pull those numbers takes pure raw strength, no matter the distance the weight moves

Depends on the type of lift. Powerlifters that are short, stocky and barrel chested do well in Powerlifting. Most are still freakishly strong. With that said, there are one offs that are just freaks. I have a Marine that powerlifted. He was just a tad shorter than me 6’0” (I’m 6’4”) we called 1/4 ton. Cuz that freak could rep 500. Pretty easily. Now momentum lifts are a different story. Any Strong man or Olympic lifts tend to be taller. So yeah. For the most part, the less distance to travel in struck lifts, better to be a shorter guy. Momentum lifts. Taller. And just to prove a point. Any lifts we did, when you seen a 5’8” or under guy, those were the ones we watched during qualifying lifts the most. Except 1/4 ton. Everyone came out to watch that freak show. 😂

To be honest that’s the most impressive part about bodybuilding and physique sport. Sure the physiques are super impressive, but the discipline and training it takes to get there says more about the person than their physique ever could.

Now as far as main stream Ed Coan and bill kazmaier they were beast back in the day and kazmaier won I think four strongmen in a row before the quit inviting him to the tournament. I mean he is too strong to play cause it ain’t fair, really?
