This is my experience with doctors.
I’ve been seeing the same primary care physician (pcp) for 30 years or so. I’ve been seeing the same urologist and dentist for 20 years. I go to the same endodontist, dermatologist and chiropractor…although my chiropractor has left and I’m currently shopping for another.
I would say that if you can’t talk about anything with your pcp than maybe you should look around for one that you’re comfortable with. I will also say that if your pcp cuts your visits short without asking about any moans or groans, then you’re probably not getting the level of care you need.
A trusted pcp will (most of the time) also refer you to someone that is like minded and you should get the same excellent trusted care.
My pcp has seen me thru the best and worst times of my life (mentally and physically). He knows about everything I’ve put into my body…he’s never judged… he’ll explain the consequences in plain English were as there’s no misunderstanding as to the end result of my actions… good, bad and ugly.
My doc looked me in the eye a couple of years ago and told me “you are extremely healthy and you have the potential to live a quality life into your 90’s possibly 40 more good years…BUT…you’ve got to get your sugar under control or it’ll be 15 years tops…and those won’t be good years”.
In my opinion, it’s also very advantageous to know a good nurse. Not necessarily at your doctors office, but a 3rd party to bounce things off.
My suggestion to younger folks is to establish a good working relationship with your pcp… it’s not a matter if you need them down the road… it’s a matter of when you need them and that’ll come up out of nowhere.
