You Got To Trust Your Doctors

This is my experience with doctors.

I’ve been seeing the same primary care physician (pcp) for 30 years or so. I’ve been seeing the same urologist and dentist for 20 years. I go to the same endodontist, dermatologist and chiropractor…although my chiropractor has left and I’m currently shopping for another.

I would say that if you can’t talk about anything with your pcp than maybe you should look around for one that you’re comfortable with. I will also say that if your pcp cuts your visits short without asking about any moans or groans, then you’re probably not getting the level of care you need.

A trusted pcp will (most of the time) also refer you to someone that is like minded and you should get the same excellent trusted care.

My pcp has seen me thru the best and worst times of my life (mentally and physically). He knows about everything I’ve put into my body…he’s never judged… he’ll explain the consequences in plain English were as there’s no misunderstanding as to the end result of my actions… good, bad and ugly.

My doc looked me in the eye a couple of years ago and told me “you are extremely healthy and you have the potential to live a quality life into your 90’s possibly 40 more good years…BUT…you’ve got to get your sugar under control or it’ll be 15 years tops…and those won’t be good years”.

In my opinion, it’s also very advantageous to know a good nurse. Not necessarily at your doctors office, but a 3rd party to bounce things off.

My suggestion to younger folks is to establish a good working relationship with your pcp… it’s not a matter if you need them down the road… it’s a matter of when you need them and that’ll come up out of nowhere.

One more thing… i see the same orthopedic surgeon also. He’s a great surgeon and his pa is top shelf. She is so good…that prior to my knee surgery I kept asking “you’ll be there right?” She told me she’s in every surgery. Wellll as they’re wheeling me in the operating room…I hadn’t laid eyes on her yet. I was told that in my loopy state that I got loud screaming for her and put up a little resistance. Of course everything took hold and I was out like a light. She was the first one there when I came out of it. She was there just running a bit late. Hahaha

I’ve had my PCP for about 15 years now. I like her alot. My only problem is when I book an appointment with her sometime I do get her and sometimes I get the nurse practitioner of the week. I have gotten this on yearly physicals as well. I’m honest with my doctor but am not telling a stranger shit.

Yep…same. My doc has two of them… one old hag and one smoking hot one…named candy no less. I’ll talk to candy…the hag is just unpleasant most of the time.

Most of the NP are good at my place but they don’t stay long. I had this one, built like Olive Oil tell me I was morbidly obese and if I cared for my family I need to lose 30#. I almost lost my cool. Politely asked to see my PCP and told her that. My PCP was horrified.

Thinking more over the years… my pcp has had the same rn the whole time. We used to swap party stories.

She’s a cool lady. The joke there is she’s seen my peter more than anyone other than my wife. Hahaha

I had to drop trou once and said D I ain’t wearing underwear… she said this won’t be the first dick I’ve seen and how many times do you think I’ve seen yours anyways…. Hahaha

Yeah this new guy is cool af man! First time seeing him. He said my right elbow is definitely swollen. So he did both the shots. Then I told him I’ve still been having shoulder pain pretty bad and I’ve been here twice before for them. So now im getting X-rays on them and he wants to set up for mri. Cause I don’t have a lot of motion in them. Pretty happy. I’ve been in a lot of pain for awhile now and honestly just dealt with it.

I don’t have a doc but I do have a spine surgeon if I have the need in the future. I pray I don’t need him.
I treat myself via online drugs when need be. I don’t trust doctors in general or most people. Hahaha 😀

I have worked with a nephrologist quite i bit i her like a lot shes from nicaragau(IDK spelling). Knows a decent amount about peds, first time i saw her she asks if i take steroids im like yes, shes like they are bad for your health but you are unikely to stop so i will try to keep you somewhat healthy.
PCP on the otherhand i have never found one i liked, went through 3 of them. Know i mostly just go to her. I do need to find a good PCP.
I will try Maerck health when i have more money in the future.

I have a very high end internist–the kind that won’t take insurance and charges an arm and a leg, but will call you back two minutes after you text her and call in a prescription (within reason) for whatever you need. My wife has been a bit depressed for various understandable reasons and can’t seem to get past it as she did when young. Call the doc, prescription for Prozac (which has worked small miracles, BTW). Anxious? Small prescription for Xanax (10 pills) with a warning that if you take it every day, you’ll get hooked. Doesn’t ask if you need a prostate exam, just turns you around and WHOOP, up your ass her finger goes. In short, she just practices medicine on the (accurate) assumption that her clients are smart and, thus, worth of having their opinions respected even though they aren’t trained medical professionals. I love that. But she also just unilaterally does what she concludes you need, regardless of whether you asked for it. Again, that is very cool.

And she knows I’m on TRT, but not anything else. My total test came back at 2000 one time, leading her to say perhaps I was overdosed! But I’m thinking about coming completely clean with her in order to get the benefit of her big pulsating brain. (Didn’t know how I was going to end that sentence, did you?!). Because she doesn’t take insurance, that’s not an issue; she isn’t going to tell any third party anything about me. I’ve always had great hesitation coming clean even with my TRT doc. But I think I’m going to do so at my next visit and just get the lecture, but tell her that isn’t going to make me stop and that I need her to help take care of me given what I’m going to do anyway. @NeuroRN and @Poppy, encourage me here.

I think this is absolutely the best choice you can make. She sounds like she knows her stuff. And the best thing we can do is surround ourselves by people who know more than us.

I’d present to her what you do, the steps you take to mitigate risk. Bring information regarding the necessity for an ARB to help mitigate risk and ask her for telmisartan (micardis)

I know on my end, when a patient knows their stuff and is trying to be proactive in their care it helps me join their cause.

Be detailed in the way you explain you risk management, and why you are telling her. Nothing wrong with playing to someone’s ego to get what you need. I do it to patient family members all the time 😂😂 tell her you are telling her so she can help you be safe in your favorite pastime.

I support this 100%.
