Well...time for a new push mower

Definitely an anything goes topic! My manual gas powered push mower is finally going to get retired. Had to do many makeshift fixes over the past year (e.g., gas cap broke and couldn’t find one that fit correctly so put foil over the top, cable that held the lever at the handle broke so tied it up with a spool of wire to hold it in place). LOL. Now the motor is failing.

I don’t have a big yard as we are in a subdivision (probable just 1/2 acre at most), so definitely do not need a riding one. I also kind of like manual as it gives you a mini workout as we have a lot of hills. Leaning towards another gas one (don’t trust those lithium rechargeable ones though it’d be nice to not deal with gas or changing the oil, but that’s easy enough). Probably need one of those 3 in 1 versions that mulch, has a bag you can attach, as well as the option to just blow the grass off to the side, though I try to cut it often enough that I don’t need to bag it, but not always. Still on the fence on self propelled as my son just started last year cutting the grass to earn a little spending money, though he was usually fine with the manual except when it was really hot outside.

Any recommendations from any lawn mowing gurus? Don’t want to pay a significant amount. Just enough to get the job done well and one that will last for many years to come. Most I’ve seen that seem to be reasonable are around $200-250 for manual push, but definitely fluctuates when you add in self propelled.

Haha. This turned into a pretty lengthy post for just a lawnmower topic.

I have an all wheel drive 22” deck Husqvarna that kicks ass! Probably overkill on the HP, but I got tired of having pansy ass mowers big down on me in this thick ass St. Augustine grass that I hate so much. I have about .30 acres and it will now over a small child without skipping a beat.

Sounds like I’m in the ballpark with your mowers. Based on current reviews on various websites and consumerreports, this one was suggested which should definitely do the job. Actually found it with free shipping from Wally World for ~$300.

I have a toro, self propelled with personal pace that is 3 in 1, 22” deck and 160 cc Brigs & Stratton. I love it. I try to mow twice a week to prevent my grass getting stupidly long, and last year it was very helpful in rehabbing my hip.

@John, I will be 41 in 9 days… hahaha. we have a corner lot so I like to keep it kept. I used to just bag it and mow it once weekly, but that started to turn into a pain in the ass.

In my area there a hundred lawn services. I paid to get my lawn cut for 10 years. We have bigger lots in my hood. I bit the bullet and purchased a rider and trimmer…spent several grand…during some of these sweltering 100 degree summer days… I’m thinking it might have been a bad decision. Hahaha.

Ha, I’m 44 and no way in hell would I mow twice a week. We used to have 3 acres when we lived in Ga., and I had a commercial zero turn Gravely that was built like a tank and mulch up anything that got in my way. Pretty sure I ran over a few of the neighbors kids when I wasn’t paying attention.

Guy across street from me is 72, and he mows his yard twice a week and washes his vehicles twice a week, as well.

149cc or higher engine and definitely don’t get the electric garbage. I bought a weed eater that’s electric and now I can’t get a new battery and it only will hold half a charge. I would stay away from the electric stuff unreliable still.

Haha, about 75% of my neighborhood is very obsessed with their lawn. I see many, especially those that are likely retired mow their lawn twice a week and do other lawn stuff the rest of the week. We moved into this house pretty quickly after we found out we were having triplets, thus a family of 7, so a 3 bedroom house wasn’t going to cut it. Turns out almost all homes including mine have irrigation systems, which I likely never would buy on my own. That system was causing chaos for awhile as I thought I had turned it off, but finally found out it was running at 2am for 30 minutes in each of the 9 zones…was baffled why the hell I was needing to cut my grass so often! I’m sure we were the black sheep in the neighborhood as we were dealing with 3 infants and 2 kids active in various sports, so lawn maintenance wasn’t exactly a high priority, but kept it reasonable…but not like some that basically do baseball outfield strips in their yard.

Yup agree with the battery powered stuff. The house we previously lived in had a really small yard and we did have a rechargeable trimmer. It at least came with 2 batteries as I always needed both to finish the job. Got rid of that last year and got a gas trimmer…night and day difference. Just pulled the trigger on the Troy-Bilt push mower that had those specs.

Happy mowing everyone…won’t be long. I kind of find it therapeutic in a sense as I just zone out and listen to music.
