Why work hard when you can get it free?!

So context: I’m 27, worked in HVAC my whole life. Moved up the ladder into management and I try to bring up guys in a advancing and increasingly specialized career. Anyone I hire is guaranteed 40 hours, full medical and dental, paid sick, paid vacation and holidays, and end of year profit sharing bonus (entry level guys get around $2k for that after taxes). Company is a family owned business (I’m not family) and owners are good humble people who just want to take care of everyone. They literally got all 30+ employees of the company $500 gift cards to the grocery store when the pandemic hit just in case spouses got laid off.

So a year ago I hire this 32 year old guy who has been in the trade for a few years, but has been fired from 3 jobs. Explains his situations on what happens, I hear him out, offer to give him a shot and some good training, and see what he can do. Guy spends a year here and never progresses. I give him paid training every week, takes nothing from it. Owners want to fire him a while back, I tell them no, let me keep working with him as if he gets fired again, his employment record is going to be now with 4 terminations and I want to make sure I do everything I can. Sadly, he doesn’t progress, but I still keep putting in effort waiting for a light bulb to click. He’s only making $16 an hour, but has a laid out plan where he can make more, but doesn’t follow through. But all his other benefits are more then generous.

So he walks into my office today… asks if I have any interest in letting him go. I asked “Are you asking me to fire you?” He then explains how he’s 32 and not progressing in life, how he makes such little money, how customers ask him how much he makes and they feel sorry for him (wtf). He then says that we laid off someone during covid so they can get unemployment (which wasn’t true) and asked if we could do the same for him.

It took every bone in my body not to tear this guy’s head off. Literally asked me to fire him so he can get unemployment because he’s a fucking mooch. I keep my mouth shut as this is the kind of guy to report me if I say something wrong probably. I say that that’s fraud and not how it works, sounds like he wants to quit. He said that he’ll take the weekend and think about it and let me know.

I let him leave, I sit in my chair in shock. Does this dude really think he has the choice now to keep working here? He just puts such a stain on my generation. He’s given the opportunity to move up if he takes initiative, but literally wants you to hold his hand the entire way. It’s just bullshit with how people want to abuse this unemployment. And I don’t think he sees how good he has it.

Anyway, that was my rant. Thanks for reading haha. I need a drink

Hate those type of people. I used to get compliments from old supervisor when I I worked in lumber for $11 rounding up after I had made twice that in previous job for still working hard on Ben though I hated place I worked. I always said I’m not fuck the customers cause this place treats me shitty also I hate not given my best in. Shit. Also this guy has to be stupid as
It seems most states are ending the federal added money to unemployment

I am. It superseded at all. These kids now a days are spoiled lazy. They feel as though everyone owes them something, nothing is ever good enough.
I have a very nice truck, lifted, big tired etc. one of my sons friends ask me “ what do I need to do to get a truck like yours ? I’ve been trying to but can’t” I said first bud, you need a fucking job! This truck is $70,000 and I work 2 jobs, what do you do for work. Keep in mind he’s 17 but he replies “nothing”.
BOOM! My some works 2 jobs during the week after school.

I’m still figuring out how to play it. I can have him do bitch work and drive him out, but a mooch like this I wouldn’t put it past him to take a dive on a job and collect workers comp from it.

I was thinking that. The plant I retired from had that policy. When an employee was pending adverse action (fired) they put them out on admin leave. Full pay don’t come back in the plant until we say so… to get fired. Too many of them prior to that policy would go out to the shop floor and “get hurt” and go on workers comp prior to getting fired. Sometimes the comp would be parlay’d into med retirement. All that from a worthless employee.

Sitting here thinking about all that. They used to have a cardboard recycling yard out back of the plant.

There was a booth about 3x3 feet with a log book, little fan and littl screen to read the scales the trucks would weigh on in and out. That’s where they stick some of those folks gaming the system on light duty or workers comp.

I have had to fire many people over the years. One tried to sue me because they said they had adhd and I was discriminating them for
It. Turns out they didn’t even have it. Judge through it out after I spent 4 gs in legal fees.

Almost everyone I fired applied for unemployment and when the agency contacted me I told them they were terminated but yet they still approved them for unemployment. WTF

Hvac is an amazing and high earner trade. You basically taken this guy under your wing to make him better at something he doesn’t want based on his actions. You can’t want it more than him brother. Cut him loose. Shit I’m 46. I would jump ship right now from what I’m doing if someone wanted to help me like that in a high paying trade.
I guess that’s just the difference in generations. I was born in the 70’s

There isn’t one thing you can do for folks like that. It’s in his dna to be a scamming lazy azz.

My last year as a service tech at my current company made just over 100k. All residential work. There’s so much opportunity in trades it’s sad how for high school kids it’s not even presented as a option. Hard work sure, but the money is there for those who want to work for it

There was an indepth meta-study i read years ago that showed that if a person was wanting to put the work in, as you described above, that a tradesman can make more over the long run than the average college educated “professional”.

Taking into consideration the astronomical college loans and starting at the bottom.
