Garage Gym - In Progress

The dumbbell fairy arrived! I’ve gotten a couple workouts and have say these adjustable dumbbells are great. Not only does it replace the need to have 17 individual dumbbells, but it has great knurling very similar to my Ohio Power Bar. Only thing is I can see why most companies stop at 90lbs as you do need to be careful when setting them down after doing a lift or you could risk damaging the mechanism. Typically, if going heavy I go to barbells, but these are great to switch things up to do more moderate weight lifts. May grab some standard hex dumbbells sometime in the future for 90, 100, and 110, but not a priority now.

I’m still working on the black diamond plate that will go along the back wall (4 ft in area where I lift outside the cage, 1 ft to extend across the rest of the back wall. Practicing using some power metal shears to be sure I can cut a nice straight line as there are a few cuts I have make and don’t want to mess it up! Probably will pull the trigger this weekend.

I’ve never had my hands on the adjustable dbs. Kinda wanted a set though. Can I ask what brand?

Critical Supplies. It’s very similar to the Bowflex version and priced about the same. I believe the 90lb Bowflex is out of stock for the foreseeable future. Reviews actually seemed to favor these over Bowflex and they are currently in stock!

That’s actually cool as hell I looked into these and the price was outrageous I ended up buying 200lb adjustable dumbbells but manual its all plates they kinda suck but I can load them up if needed I don’t normally get that high in weight using dumbbells I can understand why you would want some 110lb or even 100lb for sure you might need to down grade to the crappie ones I have lol everything looks great brother

Yeah they are definitely pricey and much more than I’d typically pay for dumbbells…it was the quick change ability that was the main thing I liked the most as well as the space saver. Typically I don’t care about that too much and only care if the weight is accurate. I do have those manual change dumbbells that work with 1 in diameter plates. Have a few 25 in plates that work with them. Just waiting on Walmart to get one more, as those 25s are just $23 bucks. Whenever I’m over there I check if they have them, but haven’t seen them lately. I think I can load my manual dumbbells to have 2 25s on each side as well as a 5 or 10, so that’s probably my best bet for doing anything above 90 lbs. The biggest downside to the new ones is that I’m very paranoid to not accidentally ding them against anything or worse drop them as I could be down dumbbell if not careful. They seem very well built, but not taking any chances.

It’s rough finding equipment during this covid crap as most places are price gouging. I believe part of the reason is there is a shortage of iron/steel due to the global effects of this pandemic. Fortunately, I finally have essentially everything I need, just waiting on the barbell plate set which have started arriving slowly in batches. I’m pretty sure the local UPS hates me and is wondering what the hell Im ordering as the boxes don’t usually state the contents…plan to give him a pretty good tip after my last batch arrives and reassure him he won’t have to worry about hauling up 100+ lb packages for awhile. LOL

Post more progress pics brother. I’ve had a gym for a long time but I’m picking up ideas from you! Oh and most important…you gotta name it. It’s YOUR gym so YOU get to name it!

Will do! Today is the day to finally get this diamond plate up. I have a dark gray top trim that slips on the top to make a nice clean edge. Going to use an angle grinder to cut some of the trim pieces to fit then some power shears to cut some of the diamond plate. I think I’ll have some more diamond plate leftover so may find another good spot and run a strip on the wall and put additional pegs in to hold barbell plates. Only thing I’m thinking of adding is a few more horse stable mats to run sideways to add additional space. I had some of those crappy jigsaw puzzle mats which are nowhere near the protection the stable mats provide. Also, I can just pull my car in over those mats. Good ol tractor supply store near me finally has them in stock (4x6 and weigh about 100 lbs each) and just 40 bucks.

I would put stable mats down but I’m a lazy ass and don’t want to move everything out. Haha I’ve got old low pile carpet. It’s filthy. I really like your diamond plate. That might be my next endeavor.

One thing that is awesome is the wall mounted heater I have (Heat Storm). It can be turned on by your phone and warms up the garage to 65 degrees or so after 30-45 min. It was hitting near 70 at the end of my workout and it is 10 degrees outside. Glad the previous owners clearly put some good insulation in the walls.

Down south thats not an issue…I built my workshop/gym and i did insulate it also. Been kicking the idea of ac for summer time. See prior post about lazy ass.

Whatcha going to name your gym?

My buddy and wifey came up with rage cage gym a long time ago and it stuck. My tatt in my avatar will explain it better.

My delivery guy hated me when I was building my gym. He actually when I got my hex bar just left it next to the road instead of walking it up lol he was a small guy it weighed as much as him almost lol

Haha…lazy ass? That doesn’t sound like you! I thought I saw a recent post from you saying how you are known in your neighborhood as the project guy (always tearing stuff down and redoing it better than before). Or was that someone else? 😎 Haven’t really been thinking about the gym name, but do need to come up with something. Neighbors and coworkers have been eying it…maybe I could charge admission fees when it’s finally done. However, I do like working out alone to get in the zone, though my 12 year old has been joining me a lot lately. Just teaching him the correct technique for lifts and what exercise works which muscle group. He was doing front squats the other day…great form and actually listens way better than normal…really proud of him 👍

The main diamond plate wall is about to go up. Had to trim it a bit and attach the gunmetal top trim using clear liquid nails. Going to use a strong construction double sided tape at the edges then heavy duty liquid nails caulk in the middle.

Yeah that’s me…rebuilding stuff all the time. Hahaha. I had a couple of very close buddies that were ALLOWED to come train with me. I’ve told many NO. they got butt hurt but I don’t have to let them come over…not mandatory.

Here’s the back main wall. Next is shorter diamond and inside corner guards to wrap it around. Going to have to make a trip to Walmart as I easily used 2 cans of liquid nails. This sucker will not come off nicely…if you try I’m sure the entire drywall will come with it! The trim adds a nice touch.
