Diary of a middle aged, fat, broken mans comeback

Squat today, RPE 7, 5x5 and beat week 1… 2 sets of 5 at 199, I think I accomplished that. However, it was very sketchy in the bottom of the hole, I’ll probably stay there for a couple weeks until it’s comfortable

@JB_rD81 Have you noticed anything different in how you have to lift. For example, I can no longer do dumbbells over my head with no idea why. Joints and such age but does your cycle help repair or improve strength around and issues you might have?

Skull crushers irritate my left elbow, I wear a big brace when I do them, actually any tri related aggravates my left elbow

@vetvso there’s Some minor things. I always squatted low bar, with a very wide stance, I can no longer take that stance, however the bar still sits on my rear delts, making a narrow stance kind of funny. I can deadlift, but I have noticed that exercises where I really accentuate my hips coming through is a no go, good mornings, pull throughs, hyper extensions, but I can do a reverse hyper as long as I stay fairly light. With my shoulders it’s hit or miss, I had two surgeries on my right shoulder for a rotator cuff injury 20 years ago, and it’s touch and go there. As long as I don’t get ridiculous, I can do most anything, but it has certainly had an adverse effect on how strong my bench has been

No, I didn’t give up… I stopped logging on my phone and started writing in a note book, it’s much easier. This week is my last deload, supposed to hit PR’s in all three lifts next week, but the squat and DL won’t really be PR’s, haha. Planning my next training cycle as well, and thinking out my next blast cycle. Between hip replacement, all the covid closures, work being busy as fuck, I’ve gotten fat as fuck! Fatter than I ever was when I was competing

I’m probably going to start the notebook thing now that I should start to see lore gainz in lifts with eating more

I remember what I left week to week but it will be nice to visually see overload

I always wrote it down when I was still competing, I have old note books and spread sheets full of shit. The last few years before my hip surgery though were really just going through the motions. This first training cycle back I logged everything, it took me almost the whole 12 weeks to remember what real training was really like, and then I still had my wife in my ear the whole time asking me why the hell I was trying to squat and deadlift again. I take notes on every exercise, whether or not it was comfortable, if I think I should do it again in relation to my artificial hip, whether I was up or down from the last time I did it. I log all my pain, everything. It makes everything so much easier

Let me just state, Saturday’s at the gym suck… my buddy has a few college ball players that come into his gym that think they’re strong… my 40 year old busted ass shows them up week in and week out… it’s getting old, and it’s starting to hurt

I wouldn’t even bother not worth the risk of injury
Just let them go stick to your routine and laugh at them but remember we were young once too

I have no need to go as high weekly doses as I used to with stuff. I’ve given my body a nice little break from anything other than test for almost a year, and the test has been at 200 mg/wk split into two shots. I’m thinking between 350 and 400 mg of test and starting out around 200 mg of NPP. I’ll probably just shoot both E.O.D or Every 3rd day. I’ll listen to my body and have bloods done pre and during, last time I was on NPP I ran 200 mg a week for a little over a year. I mostly just want it for the lubrication in my joints. Eventually I’ll add GH to the mix, my wife uses it, I’ve just never felt the need

Deload DL’s and Squats today, 5x1 at a 5 RPE… I’m 3 sets in on dead’s, 102.25 KG (225) and I have to take a wicked shit! Kind of reminds me of my competition days, always had to shit immediately after my first squat attempt, it wasn’t bad as a raw competitor, unless the flight was small… when I lifted equipped, that sucked…

Finished up 10/20 life today, hit PR’s this week, went for rep PR’s on everything. 315 for an easy double on deadlifts, hit 225 finally on squats for a double today, 285 for a double on bench Tuesday. This week I’ll probably re start with week 1. I may change up the way I do my assistance work, not sure I liked the way Brian Carroll had the assistance laid out, at least for the way I like to train. Also going to up my test from 200 mg/wk to 400 mg/wk, along with 250 mg wk NPP, 3 shots a week.

I have 2 weeks of logs to upload for my second go around. I changed a few things on this cycle, as I said before I upped my test to 375 mg/wk and added NPP @ 225 mg/wk mostly for joint comfort, I have noticed a little discomfort in my right hip, it’s got me worried so I’m being proactive with mobility and supplements to help the health. My bench workouts will be done as an overload with a reactive slingshot in hopes to get a little carryover from the heavier weights, deadlifts will stay the same, and squats will be strictly box squats for now in an attempt to reduce any inflamation in my right hip.
