That is awesome advice bro i agree 110% what you believe in your mind will become reality for your body. The mind is the most powerful part of our make-up and never ever put a barrier up mentally as it will dictate what youcan accomplish physically. Bigmurph you are as intelligent as you are a gentleman my bro very proud to have you and all my brothers here as part of my family!! This site kicks all types of ass you guys have done such an amazing job here 😉

Thats fkn awesome bro as long as you are giving your all who gives a shit what anyone thinks! No one can judge you except God and if you are happy with yourself then thats really all that matters. Get after my bro :facepunch:t2:

Actually in BJJ no one will think bad of new guys. It’s a learning curve to the sport. I used to teach it. BJJ is all about control and keeping your breathing in order. When people start they tend to try too hard and often try to out muscle the opponent rather then outsmart them. It’s like the fighting version of a chess game. It’s one of the best cardiovascular workouts rolling with people of different levels. In short time @Burrr will be just like the experienced guys there. I used to tell students over an over to slow down and think more and don’t try to out muscle me. But it’s one of the best sports anyone can take up at any age.

The guys I’m training with are really helpful. I can tell they want to see me improve.
There is one blue belt that’s about 22 and really competitive, i think he makes a challenge of seeing how many times he can choke me out in 5 min, lol.

The rest of the guys teach me as we roll.

Yesterday I rolled with a young blue belt guy again. he started things off with a wicked fast scissor sweep.
I asked him if he could show me again what he just did, and he did a couple more times and slow mo.
All I had to do is ask he was happy to teach me instead of choke me, LOL

Ronin, you got any advice for a 50 year old white belt?
My main focus has been working on fundamentals without gassing out. I’ve gotten used to being submitted, so that ego is long long gone.

My first advice is being patient and put the ego in the pocket. Each of your ego-showing activities will end with the same reaction from the higher belts. The basis is not to fight on the tatami only to learn. You are at the first steps stage, so what do you want to show? relax, learn basics like close guard, side control, kesa gatame, mount control and escapes. These are absolutely fundamental basic to learn from the beginning.
You are 50 years old does not mean anything, sport is for everyone, depends on how you approach it, the more relaxed it’s better, remember that the ligaments and joints are not as strong as before and any unnecessary injury will eliminate us from the BJJ and the gym. Remember to earlier Tapin out why? because it’s better to tap out and continue to sparring like having something broken and training off 3-6 months. Do not try to do things which you do not understand, always ask the instructor, then you will see that “the ego” is just a trap in this sport
I had many bodybuilders on the tatami and after a few minutes of sparring their ego fell to a minimum.
Strength is not everything, some of the bodybuilders accepted tapin with humility and they learned further and others with the broken ego were never coming back. Sometimes I do not even take a sparring just to prove something, it does not make sense. The most important thing is that BJJ must give you pleasure if you take pleasure in it, then you will take the first step, remember everybody was beginner and to get to the next belt you should leave a liters of sweat on the tatami. This is just beginning…….
